Morocco Trips

In this trip we will take routes that are not normally used by the usual tourism tours. Meaning that we will take you to all the places that a traveller obviously should not miss, but at the same time away from the usual tourist hustle, sharing with you all the places, people and culture we know and love. We will not have a schedule to meet or need to be somewhere at a specific time. It is supposed to be a relaxing but adventurous journey for all your senses.

We will always try to sleep in Riads and Kasbahs.

Riad is the name given to houses and palaces, which are the traditional housing in the “almedinas” (historical urban centres) of Morocco. The most striking feature is that they are completely closed to the outside and are structured around a central interior courtyard, usually with a small garden or fountain, typical Arab-Andalusian style that originated from the Roman urban village.

Kasbah has long played the role of a fortified castle, being a place of refuge for people and animals, protecting them from cold and other threats. The kasbah is a majestic housing residence belonging to a family. It is an imposing building erected over a square plan. While Kasbahs in mountain valleys are robust, the ones in the Oasis in the South have a taller appearance. The four corners have towers with “merlons”.

Riad and Kasbah are hotels run by families, for small groups, usually located in the historical areas of cities or villages. In this way, there is always a more cared service and a more intimate experience with the local communities. The rooms are double rooms for two+ people, and most of the times with double beds. Therefore, it would be nice to take this trip with a partner or a good friend. In case there is no availability for a room with 2 single beds, or you are unwilling to share a room, please indicate this preference when you register. This is subject to availability and further confirmation as well as the additional payment of a single room supplement.

We will use minivans or off-road vehicles.

The basic languages are Portuguese, English and German.

You will have one trip leader that is responsible for a maximum group of 6 people. The largest group size will be 12 fellow travellers accompanied by 2 leaders. Each leader is always somebody from our agency in Portugal, never a local contact person that does not know you and whom you don´t know. Before the trip starts, you will know who your leader(s) will be.

We cannot guarantee that one thing. For those things that depend on us, the utmost effort will be done to keep everything on track. However, there are a few things that can´t be controlled. A simple thing such as weather conditions can have an effect in some remote areas where we will be traveling through. From rainstorms near the Atlas, to sand storms near the desert it is always an adventure. All will be done to keep you safe, even if it means having to change the course of the trip. So don´t worry and keep an open spirit.

Traveling to a completely different country in terms of culture means, we must respect their traditions and customs. Your clothing should be light and comfortable, avoiding the use of synthetic fibres because of the heat. Tight or short clothes are not appropriate.

You should include in your luggage sunscreen for the day and insect repellent for the night.

Bring with you a pair of sunglasses, and when you speak to anyone, especially the authorities do not hesitate to remove them.

The luggage must be practical and malleable, without a rigid structure so it can easily fit inside the vehicles.

We will always eat local food, especially in the south of the Atlas Mountain. They have a very simple way of life, so you will not have a lot to choose from for your meal. As they say, if it looks good, eat it. For our lunch we will eat on the way, in villages or cities.
Remember:

  • Do not eat anything that is, or looks raw.
  • Fruit must always be pealed by YOU; after being washes with bottled water, again, by YOU.
  • Nuts and dates are to be avoided.

No. Never drink tap water or anything with ice cubes including fruit juices. At all times, bottled water will be available in the vehicles at your disposal, in the amount you need and want. It might not be chilled but it is definitely safe.

Vaccines: There is no special vaccine that you have to take when traveling to Morocco. It is advisable to have your usual vaccines up to date (tetanus, hepatitis, etc.).

Medicine: If you need to take some type of medicine, take a sufficient amount with you for the length of the journey. It will be difficult to find them in the north of the Atlas and quite impossible in the south. Just in case, bring with you some medicine in case of foodborne disease and/or gastrointestinal problems.

In the north of the Atlas Mountains, there are ATMs in all major cities we will be traveling through, being the use of credit cards in shops not that common. You should always carry bare cash with you, but always taking care not to show it in public. In the south, nearly everywhere only bare cash counts.

For you to make your calculations, estimate 1€ = 10 Dirham.

Ask your tour leader for more information on this subject.
